For absolutely no reason, I got to wondering earlier today--can you tell anything about a person by their fingerprints? Do men and women's fingerprints differ? What about different races?
The answer, it turns out, is yes (paywall), at least when it comes to gender. (I would think it may be more a matter of sex than gender?) Women tend to have greater ridge density.
There seems to at least be some correlation with race, but this is also historically problematic.
It seems like the divide isn't particularly sharp, though, so you're apt to get a conclusion like, "Odds favor these fingerprints being male" than, "The burglar was clearly a Caucasian woman."
